Past prizewinners of this competition are eligible to participate, but past winners of this competition are not eligible to compete again. There are no set pieces; the only requirement is that all performers must play classical guitar. Performers are encouraged to show diversity and contrast in their programming that exhibits a wide range of stylistic, technical, and interpretive elements in order to show judges panel a well-rounded performance.
Each competitor will be ranked from 1-10 in four separate categories:
- Programming-Diversity, Creativity, and Breadth of Repertoire.
- Interpretation-performance practice, tempo, dynamic control, phrasing.
- Technique- Rhythmic Accuracy, Articulation, Intonation, Tone Quality and Variety of Tone.
- Artistry-Memorization, Stage Presence, and Artistic Maturity.
The first round limits each performer to 10 minutes of stage time; the second round limit is 15 minutes and the Final round 20 minutes. There will be 8 semi-finalists and 4 finalists chosen for the respective rounds. Judges will all be chosen from outside the Central San Joaquin Valley. In the event a judge would be evaluating their own student their score will be thrown out for that performer and the average of the scores of the remaining judges will be used instead.
